ANTARCTICA (AP) — The Southern Ocean is one of the most remote places on Earth, but that doesn't mean it is tranquil. Tumultuous waves that can swallow vessels ensure that the Antarctic Peninsula has a constant drone of ocean. While it can be loud, the view is serene — at first glance, it is only deep blue water and blinding white ice.Several hundred meters (yards) off the coast emerges a small boat with a couple dozen tourists in bright red jackets. They are holding binoculars, hoping for a glimpse of the orcas, seals and penguins that call this tundra home.They are in the Lemaire Channel, nicknamed the “Kodak Gap,” referring to the film and camera company, because of its picture-perfect cliffs and ice formations. This narrow strip of navigable water gives anybody who gets this far south a chance to see what is at stake as climate change, caused mainly by the burning of oil, gas and coal, leads to a steady rise in global average temperatures. The Antarctic Peninsula stands out as one of the fastest warming places in the world. The ocean that surrounds it is also a major repository for carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to warming. It captures and stores roughly 40% of the CO2 emitted by humans, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. On a recent day, Gentoo penguins, who sport slender, orange beaks and white spots above their eyes, appeared to be putting on a show. They took breaks from their dives into the icy water to nest on exposed rock. As the planet warms, they are migrating farther south. They prefer to colonize rock and fish in open water, allowing them to grow in population.The Adelie penguins, however, don't have the same prognosis. The plump figures with short flippers and wide bright eyes are not able to adapt in the same way. By 2100, 60% of Adelie penguin colonies around Antarctica could threatened by warming, according to one study. They rely on ice to rest and escape predators. If the water gets too warm, it will kill off their food sources. From 2002 to 2020, roughly 149 billion metric tons of Antarctic ice melted per year, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. For tourists, Antarctica is still a giant, glacial expanse that is home to only select species that can tolerate such harsh conditions. For example, in the Drake Passage, a dangerous strip of tumultuous ocean, tourists stand in wonder while watching orca whales swim in the narrow strip of water and Pintado petrels soar above. The majestic views in Antarctica, however, will likely be starkly different in the decades ahead. The growing Gentoo penguin colonies, the shrinking pieces of floating ice and the increasing instances of exposed rock in the Antarctic Peninsula all underscore a changing landscape. A California Fisherman May Have Broken Records by Catching a 10.25-Pound Canary Rockfish

A Northern California fisherman may have set state and world records by catching a canary rockfish he says weighed in at 10.25 pounds

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Northern California man caught a plump canary rockfish he says weighed in at 10.25 pounds (4.65 kilograms), likely setting state and world records.Mendocino County fisherman Brendan Walsh, 26, said he caught the fish Tuesday off the coast of Albion, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of San Francisco.Walsh was headed back with his father Will Walsh after catching a few yellowtail on a cold and rainy day when he decided to make one last stop at a deeper spot. That's where the younger Walsh landed the canary rockfish.“It was a fluke,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”Canary rockfish can grow up to 2.5 feet (0.76 meters) in length and weigh 10 lbs. (4.5 kilograms), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Walsh says the ones he usually catches are small and scrawny, clocking in around 3 lbs. (1.4 kilograms). Walsh said the fish he caught this week was 2.25 feet (0.68 meters) long. He submitted the catch to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, which tracks angling and diving records. The current state record-holding fish weighed in at 9 lbs. and was caught last November, also in Mendocino County. The department has a form and instructions for submitting a possible record catch, including the names and phone numbers of witnesses. Applicants are asked to contact the department for the nearest environmental scientist who can identify the catch.Walsh said they weighed the fish at an authorized fish market nearby and a state fish and wildlife scientist who works in the area came over to sign off on the paperwork.Walsh has also submitted his catch to the International Game Fish Association in Florida, where the world record holding 10-pound canary rockfish was caught in 1986. He says larger fish may have been caught but never submitted for record consideration. The game fish association did not respond Friday to a request for comment. After spending Tuesday making sure they had taken the right measurements to document the catch, Walsh's mother, Deirdre Lamb, fried the rockfish with garlic and butter to eat on Wednesday.The rockfish was delicious, he said. HOUSTON, Dec 19 (Reuters) - The ‌U.S. ​Army Corps of ‌Engineers on Friday released a long-anticipated Environmental Impact ​Statement for the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), recommending that operations of the ‍oil pipeline continue with ​some conditions.The EIS, a document required by U.S. law ​to ⁠evaluate the environmental effects of major federal actions, is a win for DAPL operator Energy Transfer and a step closer to the end of a lengthy court battle between the company and ‌nearby Native American tribes, who have been fighting for ​the pipeline's ‌closure.The document recommends the continued ‍operation ⁠of DAPL, on the grounds that safeguards are put in place such as groundwater monitoring, fish tissue residue analyses and water and sediment sampling, as well as the deployment of new leak detection technology.A U.S. court in 2022 ordered the federal government to undertake a more intensive ​EIS of the 1,100-mile (1,800-km) crude pipeline's route as part of the dispute between Energy Transfer and the tribes who have cited risks to water quality as the pipeline runs through Lake Oahe, with the crossing around half a mile north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.The pipeline has continued to operate while the review is being carried out. 4 generations have celebrated holidays at this Oregon family’s midcentury beach house

An Oregon beach house that remains virtually unchanged since 1964 has a secret staircase and bedroom with floating bunk beds.

For four generations, a timeless midcentury modern house on Oregon’s central coast has been the holiday gathering spot for the family of environmental philanthropists John and Betty Gray.Vintage photos neatly sorted into photo albums show the Grays’ adult children and their spouses working at Formica counters preparing Christmas and Hanukkah meals. “Cooks in the kitchen,” John Gray wrote on the album page.Another photograph captures family members relaxing near the Christmas tree, with kids and wrapping paper on the living room carpet. Gray captioned this scene “utter chaos.” And a 50th wedding anniversary portrait of the late John and Betty, taken in 1995 as they posed in front of a stone fireplace wall at the beach house, has Gray’s remark that they celebrated weeks early, “at Christmas, when all were there.”While John and Betty had a year-round house south of Portland as well as residences at recreational resorts he developed, including Sunriver near Bend, John considered the discreet dwelling in Gleneden Beach his family’s “homestead.”Windows in the two-story house frame the natural landscape, but the furniture intentionally faces away from the view.Kristin Walrod, who married John and Betty Gray’s oldest grandson, Nick Walrod, 27 years ago at the beach house, said the focus here is on family.She said the 61-year-old beach house, still in near-original condition, and passed on to John and Betty’s children, has been “a continuously loved family haven.” John and Betty, both raised in Oregon, had five children and 12 grandchildren. There are now 13 great-grandkids between the ages of 2 and 23, with one more expected in January.“We used to have a combined family Christmas here every other year,” Kristin said, while standing in the kitchen and looking at the expandable dining table. “But now our family branches are so big, families rotate through the holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.” In November, Kristin and Nick, who live in Portland and have three children, hosted a holiday party at the beach house for more than 60 friends and neighbors. The wood-burning fireplace in the living room was glowing, and guests who wandered out to the glass-walled sunporch were warmed by the fire pit; some continued to the stone terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The five-bedroom home can feel cozy or expansive, said Kristin, a fiction writer and educator who sometimes uses the place as a quiet writing retreat.The family’s beach house “can handle a big group with lots of energy, but it doesn’t feel echo-y when there’s just one or two people,” she said. “The home adapts. Later in life, his recreational resort developments were purposefully designed to preserve much of the natural landscape.In the 1960s, he developed the residential and resort communities Salishan Coastal Lodge and Resort in Gleneden Beach between the Pacific Ocean and Siletz Bay and Sunriver Resort south of Bend in central Oregon.In the 1990s, he was a leading force in developing the Skamania Lodge on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge. Gray also guided the redevelopment of Southwest Portland’s industrial riverfront in the 1970s at John’s Landing, named for the B.P. John Furniture Co. He said he and his family saw the area as a gateway to downtown Portland that should not have empty warehouses, but be an inviting residential and commercial district.In a 1969 Sports Illustrated interview, Gray said he was determined “to create a commercial enterprise that blends into the environment without insult.” The magazine called Gray “Oregon’s visionary land lover.” Before he became a developer, Gray started working for chipper chain inventor Joseph Buford Cox at the Oregon Saw Chain Manufacturing Corporation in 1948, after serving in the U.S. Army. Later, as president, Gray grew the company that is now the brand Oregon Tool, a global leader in wood cutting tools and other equipment.In 1984, he sold the business that revolutionized the timber industry.It is only fitting that homes in his resort developments, like the family’s beach house, were designed in the Northwest modern style and constructed of local timber like fir and cedar and other materials that blend into the landscape.Land leases at Salishan require homeowners to maintain the setting and “enhance the scenic values of a location unusually blessed with natural beauty.” Early champions of the Northwest modern style, architects Pietro Belluschi, John Yeon and Van Evera Bailey, used stone from the Cascade mountains and river rock, and glass panels to bring the outdoors inside.The Grays hired Portland-born Bailey to design their 1949 Lake Oswego house on land Betty’s parents gifted them as newlyweds. In 1956, Bailey designed the couple’s second home in Dunthorpe, where the family lived for 23 years. And in 1964, Bailey designed the beach house. The preservation organization Restore Oregon said Bailey created highly livable and unpretentious homes focused on the placement of the structure on the site, the view from the house and an emphasis on gathering spaces.Bailey’s design for the beach house followed the natural contours of the landscape. Plate-glass panels secured in wood frames rise from the floor to vaulted ceilings with exposed oak beams. The living room, which Bailey saw as the social center of the home, is positioned beyond the entrance, kitchen and dining area, and against a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. The primary bedroom and the so-called “honeymoon suite” are on the main level. The staircase to the second story can be closed off by hall doors that match the amber-colored hemlock on the walls. For larger gatherings, the family opens the doors, transforming the upstairs rumpus room’s kitchenette into a beverage station and the downstairs laundry into a coat room.Traditionally, the second story is used as the kids’ space. There are three bedrooms. A long bunk room has four single beds on the floor and above them, four cantilevering beds anchored to a wall. Each bed has a reading light and built-in closet. In 1964, a Sunset magazine photographer captured images of the bunk room as well as the hidden spiral staircase that connects the kids’ top floor to the lower-level laundry room exit. For three generations, John and Betty Gray’s children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren have stepped down the secret staircase. Once outside, they pass a rope swing that seems always to have been there. They move by native hemlock and spruce trees and coastal shrubs that provide a natural privacy screen, and eventually they take a path to the shore. One 30-year-old family photo shows grandson Gray Hoffman as a second-grader, hands on hips, feet in the water and facing down oncoming waves. John Gray captioned this photo in his album simply: “Gray in the surf on a sunny Christmas Day.”Hoffman, now 37, has a photo of his son, Louie, who will soon be 3, in the same spot.To Hoffman, the beach house is “the only physical location that has been consistent in my life.” The home is not only nostalgic to him, but he and his wife, Maddie West, have celebrated every other Thanksgiving at the long dining table with their friends.The house, he said, is ”a fun combination of time with family, but also making our own traditions."Preserving the houseMidcentury beach houseThe front of the beach house has inch-thick cedar siding that has weathered to a natural silver-gray patina and is shrouded by trees. “It is unassuming and humble,” Kristin Walrod said, “which was very much John and Betty’s personality.” Natural landscaping and native trees in the back of the lot allow the house to be inconspicuous to people strolling along on the sand. Kristin said this was another founding principle of the design of the house and the entire Salishan community. Broad, extended roof overhangs, which are another feature of modern design, shade interiors from summer sun, protect outdoor spaces from rain and create an indoor-outdoor connection. Inside, original midcentury furnishings retain their sleek appeal. George Nelson Saucer Bubble pendants dangle from angled ceilings clad in rough fir planks. Two iconic Eames lounge chairs with molded wood shells and matching black-cushioned ottomans are in the living room. Minimalistic Scandinavian stained-wood chairs along with two sofas provide more seating.A large handmade drum is used as a coffee table; smaller drums are end tables.“Kids love to beat on the drums,” said Kristin. The drum tops are also used as surfaces to play board and card games.John Manca of Blue Mountain Contractors in Gleneden Beach worked with John Gray for more than two decades to make repairs or improvements to the beach house while preserving original materials.The house is a timeless, simple design, Manca said. “John and Betty were very understated people. It wasn’t about making something flashy; they liked subtle.”Together, John Gray and Manca designed a small dwelling where John Gray lived after Betty’s death in 2003 at age 81. John gave the beach house to his children. A short walking bridge links the two dwellings.The exterior front door to the small house was carved by renowned Oregon wood sculptor Leroy Setziol. He also created elegant door panels from black walnut for the Salishan Lodge. Manca remembers once discussing construction details about the small house with John Gray, who was surrounded by his grandchildren. “I was impressed because I thought, you know, he’s a powerful person and yet here, he’s grandpa, and the kids are running around wanting attention for this or that.“I admired that,” said Manca. “John was a real quiet person and he and Betty were quite a couple.”John died at age 93 in 2012.The Gray Family Foundation was founded by John and Betty, who believed time spent outdoors could improve lives and communities. The couple directed their philanthropy to environmental education programs that bring young people to the region’s forests and beaches.A page in one of the Gray family photo albums has a black-and-white photograph of John and Betty’s first home, built on land her parents gave them. Bailey was the architect of the 1,250-square-foot house. After the Grays’ third child was born, a room addition created a second bathroom and enlarged the kids’ two bedrooms.“We did a lot of the work ourselves including landscaping,” John wrote next to the photo. He described dragging a plank of wood to level the ground to grow a lawn and break up dirt clods.“Betty wove on her loom all the drapes from Oregon linen yarn,” he wrote. Betty and her mother laid out the yardage, cut it and sewed it into finished draperies, “a very time-consuming effort.” The midcentury modern house, the first one the couple shared, was shaded by towering old trees undisturbed during construction. House & Garden magazine profiled the property in its August 1952 issue. The theme: “Large living in small spaces.”

Study Finds Cancer-Linked Chemicals in Some Firefighter Gear

FRIDAY, Dec. 19, 2025 (HealthDay News) — Some protective gear worn by firefighters may contain chemicals linked to serious health risks, according to a new study.The research — published Dec. 16 in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters — found that certain firefighter turnout gear contains brominated flame retardants, or chemicals added to materials to slow flames, but also tied to cancer and hormone problems.This is one of the first in-depth studies to closely examine whether these chemicals are present in firefighter gear and how much could be released during use.Firefighters wear turnout gear made of three layers: An outer shell that resists flames, a middle moisture barrier that blocks germs and an inner lining that helps control body heat. To meet safety rules set by the National Fire Protection Association, manufacturers treat these layers with chemicals to reduce fire risk.For years, firefighters have raised concerns about PFAS, a group of chemicals once commonly used in turnout gear to repel water and oil. PFAS exposure has been linked to cancer and other health problems.Although PFAS-treated gear has not been directly tied to illness in firefighters, many states have passed laws banning the purchase of PFAS-treated gear starting in 2027. As a result, manufacturers have begun phasing those chemicals out.That raised a new question: What chemicals are being used instead?"There was a rumor that one of the turnout gear manufacturers might be using brominated flame retardants in the non-PFAS treated textiles," study leader Heather Stapleton, a professor at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment in Durham, N.C., said in a news release."Because some brominated flame retardants have known toxicity, I requested a sample of the gear in question to test," she added.Stapleton and her colleagues tested 12 sets of turnout gear, nine made between 2013 and 2020, and three made in 2024 that were marketed as PFAS-free.They tested each layer of the gear to see:PFAS showed up in all older gear, but 2024 gear had little to no extractable PFAS, supporting claims that newer gear avoids those chemicals.However, every single set of gear tested contained brominated flame retardants, and in many cases, levels were higher than PFAS.The highest levels of brominated flame retardants were found in gear labeled as non-PFAS, especially in the moisture barrier layer.This suggests that manufacturers may be intentionally adding brominated flame retardants to replace PFAS and still meet fire safety standards.One chemical, decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), appeared most often. While it hasn’t been studied much in the U.S., a 2019 study in China linked DBDPE exposure to thyroid problems in manufacturing workers."I was really surprised that the manufacturers used DBDPE in turnout gear," Stapleton said. "It has similar properties as a toxic chemical called decaBDE that has been largely phased out globally, raising questions about its safety."In older gear, the outer shell had the highest chemical levels, most likely from smoke and soot during fires."When building materials burn, they can release brominated flame retardants into the air that stick to gear and don't wash out very well," Stapleton explained.But the presence of these chemicals inside the gear shows that manufacturing choices, and not just fire exposure, play a role.Researchers said they don’t know just yet how much of these chemicals firefighters absorb or what the long-term health effects may be.But the findings matter because turnout gear is expensive and often used for many years."Fire departments must consider both the financial and personal safety costs of keeping or replacing gear," said study co-author R. Bryan Ormond, an associate professor at N.C. How Sewage Can Be Used to Heat and Cool Buildings

Wastewater flushed down the drain can be used to heat and cool homes and buildings in a sustainable way and climate experts say it's an untapped source of energy due to its stable temperature of approximately 70°F

DENVER (AP) — When a massive event center was being developed in Denver, planners had to contend with two existing 6-foot (1.8 meters) wide sewer pipes that emptied into the river, creating an unsightly dilemma. Developers wanted to bury them. The utility said the wastewater needed to vent heat before entering the river.There, a problem became a solution.Thermal energy from the sewage now powers a system that heats and cools classrooms, an equestrian center and veterinary hospital at the National Western Center complex.It's a recent example of how wastewater flushed down the drain can heat and cool buildings in a sustainable way. Climate experts say sewage is a largely untapped source of energy due to its stable temperature of approximately 70 F (21 C). Wastewater heat recovery systems have already been installed in California, Washington, Colorado, New York and Canada. Pipes that transport sewage are already built, making it a low-cost and widely available resource that reduces the need for polluting energy sources.There's no odor since the thermal energy transfer systems keep the wastewater separate from other components.“Wastewater is the last frontier of sustainable energy,” said Aaron Miller, the eastern regional manager for SHARC Energy, adding: “Even in this current environment where environmental stuff doesn’t really sell, there’s a financial benefit that we can sell to business owners.”While the technology works in a variety of locations, the Denver complex was uniquely positioned because it’s close to major sewer lines in a low-lying industrial zone. The vast majority of the center's heating and cooling comes from wastewater heat recovery. During extremely hot or cold weather, cooling towers and boilers are used to fill in the gaps.“Every city on the planet has a place just like this,” said Brad Buchanan, the center's CEO. “This is actually a value, a benefit that the bottoms have that the rest of the city doesn’t have.” How heat from sewage can warm buildings Extracting the thermal energy starts with the water from toilets, showers and sinks traveling down usual sewage lines before flowing into a tank that is part of the heat recovery system. Heavy solids are separated and the remaining fluid flows through a heat exchanger, a sealed device with stacks of metal plates that can take heat from one source and put it into another.Thermal energy from the wastewater is transferred to a clean water loop without the liquids coming into contact. The clean water carrying the thermal energy is then sent into a heat pump that can heat or cool rooms, depending on the weather. It can also heat potable water. Once the thermal energy has been extracted, the wastewater flows back into the sewer system and eventually to a water treatment plant.The heat from the sewage replaces the need for energy from other sources to heat and cool buildings, such as electricity from the grid. Electricity is only needed to run the heat exchanger and pumps that move the water, far more energy efficient than boilers and chillers used in traditional HVAC systems. Where wastewater heating is being used Miller said the systems work best in buildings with centralized hot water production, such as apartments, commercial laundromats, car washes and factories. In residential settings, Miller said the technology is best suited for buildings with 50 or more apartment units. The technology works in various climates around the country. Some buildings supplement with traditional HVAC components.The technology utilizes existing city pipes, which reduces the need for construction compared to some types of renewable energy, said Ania Camargo Cortes, a thermal energy networks expert and board member of the nonprofit HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team).“If you can use wastewater, it’s going to be an enormous savings ... its billions of kilowatts available to us to use,” said Camargo Cortes.According to 2005 data from the U.S. Department of Energy, the equivalent of 350 billion kilowatt-hours' worth of hot water is flushed down drains each year.In Vancouver, Canada, a wastewater heat recovery system helps supply heat and hot water to 47 buildings served by the False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility. In 2025, 60% of the energy the utility generated came from sewage heat recovery, said Mark Schwark, director of water and utilities management at the City of Vancouver. The future of wastewater heat recovery Aaron Brown, associate professor of systems engineering at Colorado State University, said he believes use of the wastewater heat recovery systems will grow because it is an efficient, low-carbon system that is relatively easy to install.Unlike solar or wind power that can vary by weather or time of day, thermal energy from sewage can be available whenever it's needed, Brown said.“I think that to decarbonize, we have to think of some innovative solutions. And this is one that is not that complicated as far as the engineering technology, but it’s very effective,” said Brown.Epic Cleantec, which makes water reuse systems for office and apartment buildings, is expanding into heat recovery after previously focusing on treating water for toilets and irrigation. The company recently installed a wastewater heat recovery system in a high-rise building in San Francisco.Aaron Tartakovsky, co-founder and CEO of Epic Cleantec, said people have been conditioned to think that wastewater is dirty and should always be discarded, but his company recently launched two beers in collaboration with a brewer made from recycled shower and laundry water to illustrate novel ways to reuse it.“I think wastewater recovery is going to be a continuously growing thing because it’s something that we’re not taking advantage of,” said Tartakovsky.Peterson reported from Denver and O’Malley from Philadelphia.The Associated Press’ climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Warm Weather and Low Snowpack Bedevil Western Ski Resorts

Lack of snow is causing problems for ski resorts and other businesses in the Western U.S. that rely on wintry conditions

EDWARDS, Colo. (AP) — Ski resorts are struggling to open runs, walk-through ice palaces can’t be built, and the owner of a horse stable hopes that her customers will be satisfied with riding wagons instead of sleighs under majestic Rocky Mountain peaks. It’s just been too warm in the West with not enough snow.Meanwhile, the Midwest and Northeast have been blanketed by record snow this December, a payday for skiers who usually covet conditions out West.In the Western mountains where snow is crucial for ski tourism — not to mention water for millions of acres (hectares) of crops and the daily needs of tens of millions of people — much less snow than usual has piled up.“Mother Nature has been dealing a really hard deck,” said Kevin Cooper, president of the Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation, a ski racing organization at Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada line.Only a small percentage of lifts were open and snow depths were well below average at Lake Tahoe resorts, just one example of warm weather causing well-below-average snowpack in almost all of the West.In Utah, warmth has indefinitely postponed this winter’s Midway Ice Castles, an attraction 45 minutes east of Salt Lake City that requires cold temperatures to freeze water into building-size, palatial features. Temperatures in the area that will host part of the 2034 Winter Olympics have averaged 7-10 degrees (3-5 degrees Celsius) above normal in recent weeks, according to the National Weather Service.Near Vail, Colorado, Bearcat Stables owner Nicole Godley hopes wagons will be a good-enough substitute for sleighs for rides through mountain scenery.“It’s the same experience, the same ride, the same horses,” Godley said. “It’s more about, you know, just these giant horses and the Western rustic feel.”In the Northwest, torrential rain has washed out roads and bridges and flooded homes. Heavy mountain snow finally arrived late this week in Washington state but flood-damaged roads that might not be fixed for months now block access to some ski resorts.In Oregon, the Upper Deschutes Basin has had the slowest start to snow accumulation in records dating to 1981. Oregon, Idaho and western Colorado had their warmest Novembers on record, with temperatures ranging from 6-8.5 degrees (2-4 degrees Celsius) warmer than average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.Continued warmth could bring yet another year of drought and wildfires to the West. Most of the region except large parts of Colorado and Oregon has seen decent precipitation but as rain instead of snow, pointed out NOAA drought information coordinator Jason Gerlich.That not only doesn’t help skiers but farmers, ranchers and people from Denver to Los Angeles who rely on snowpack water for their daily existence. Rain runs off all at once at times when it's not necessarily needed.“That snowpack is one of our largest reservoirs for water supply across the West,” Gerlich said.Climate scientists agree that limiting global warming is critical to staving off the snow-to-rain trend.In the northeastern U.S., meanwhile, below-normal temperatures have meant snow instead of rain. We need to grow the economy. We need to stop torching the planet. Here’s how we do both.

The first thing that struck me about this year’s most talked-about policy book, Abundance (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), is a detail almost no one talks about.  The book’s cover art sketches a future where half of our planet is densely woven with the homes, clean energy, and other technologies required to fill every human need, liberating the other half to flourish as a preserve for the biosphere on which we all depend — wild animals, forests, contiguous stretches of wilderness. It’s a beautiful ecomodernist image, suggesting that protecting what we might crudely call “nature” is an equal part of what it means to be prosperous, and that doing so is compatible with continued economic growth. It’s a visual rebuke to those who argue that we must choose between the two.  How would we do it?  The US and its peer countries today are spectacularly rich — unimaginably so, from the vantage of nearly any point in human history — and it might be tempting to think that we have grown enough, that our environmental crisis is so grave that we should save our planet by shrinking our economy and freeing ourselves from useless junk. I understand the pull of that vision — but it’s one that I think is illusory and politically calamitous, not to mention at odds with human freedom. A world where economic growth goes into reverse is a world that would see ever more brutal fighting over shrinking wealth, and it is far from guaranteed to benefit the planet. Yet that doesn’t change the essential problem: Climate change and the destruction of the natural world pose grave immediate threats to humans, and to the nonhuman life that is valuable in itself. And we are not on track to manage it.  It’s not easy to reconcile these realities, but it is possible and necessary to do so in a way that’s consistent with liberal democratic principles. Instead of deliberately shrinking national income, we can seek out the areas of greatest inefficiency in our economy and chart a path that gets the most economic gain for the least environmental harm. If growing the economy without torching the planet is feasible in principle — and I think it is — then we should fight for it to grow in the best direction possible.  Inside this story • Meat and dairy, plus our extreme dependence on cars, are two huge efficiency sinks: they produce a big share of emissions and devour land, and they aren’t essential to economic growth or human flourishing. • Shifting diets toward plant-based foods and freeing up land could act like a giant carbon-capture project, buying time to decarbonize. • Reducing car dependence would slash transport emissions, make land use more efficient, and make Americans healthier and safer — without sacrificing prosperity. We’ll need to build out renewables at breakneck speed and electrify everything we can, of course. But some of the most powerful levers we have to decouple economic growth from environmental impact challenge us to do something even harder — to begin outgrowing two central fixtures of American life that are as taken-for-granted as they are supremely inefficient: our extreme dependence on meat and cars.  Changing those realities is so culturally and politically heretical in America that this case is almost never made in climate politics, but it deserves to be made nonetheless. And doing so will require examining the trade-offs that we too often treat as defaults.  Two great efficiency sinks It’s probably not news to you that cars and animal-based foods are bad for the planet — together they contribute around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions both globally and within the US. Animal agriculture also devours more than a third of habitable land globally (a crucially important part of our planetary crisis) and 40 percent of land in the lower 48 US states, while car-dependent sprawl fragments and eats into what’s left at the urban fringe.  We obviously need food and transportation, but meat and cars convert our planet’s resources into those necessities much more wastefully than the alternatives: plant-based food, walking, public transportation, and so on. And in a climate-constrained economy that still needs to grow, we don’t have room to waste. Beef emits roughly 70 times more greenhouse gases per calorie than beans and 31 times more than tofu; poultry emits 10 times more than beans and four to five times more than tofu. Mile-for-mile, traveling by rail transit in the US emits about a third as much as driving on average, while walking doesn’t emit anything.  For all that resource use, animal agriculture and autos are not indispensable to our economy or to our continued economic growth. The entire US agricultural sector, plus the manufacture and servicing of automobiles, make up a tiny share of our GDP; like other advanced economies, America’s is largely service-based, employing workers in everything from health care to law firms to restaurants and retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Of course, agriculture, energy, and manufacturing are foundational to everything else in the economy — without farming, Chipotle and Trader Joe’s would have no food to sell, and more importantly, we would starve. To say that agriculture isn’t a major part of our economy isn’t to say that it’s not really important to having an economy.  But it is, unsurprisingly, those foundational parts of the economy that disproportionately drive resource use and environmental impact — and because they’re a small share of the economy, we have a lot of room to change their composition without crashing GDP.  If we shifted a chunk of our food production away from meat and dairy and toward plant-based foods, for example, the already economically tiny ag sector might shrink somewhat. Meanwhile, we would save a lot of greenhouse gas emissions and land, and it would be reasonable to infer that the food service and retail sectors, which make up a significantly larger share of US GDP than agriculture does, would function all the same because we’d still eat the same number of calories and buy the same amount of food. With less meat consumption, the US might even have a significantly bigger alternative protein sector, with cleaner, better jobs than farm or slaughterhouse work.   Which is not to say there wouldn’t be any losers in the short run — job losses and stranded capital in industries that are regionally concentrated and politically powerful. But those transitions can be managed, just as we have been managing the transition away from fossil fuels.   This is exactly what decoupling — the idea that we can grow richer while decreasing emissions and other environmental impacts — looks like. The US, like a lot of other developed countries, has largely managed that in carbon emissions from energy consumption, which have fallen around 20 percent since 2005, even as the economy has grown about 50 percent in real terms. Agriculture has become more efficient, too, but it still lags on decoupling; the sector’s emissions are mostly flat or rising. Road transport tells a similar story: cars and trucks have gotten more efficient, but total emissions from driving are still stuck near their mid-2000s levels. Admittedly, it’s easier to decouple for energy than it is to change the way we eat or move around. A megawatt is a megawatt, whether it’s produced by coal or solar, while switching from steak to beans is not the same experience. But learning how to use resources more efficiently is, after all, a big part of how wealthy nations have become wealthy, including in these tougher sectors. Despite how inefficient our food system still is, the US has managed to significantly decrease how much land it uses for farming over the last century, while producing much more food. We could go much further if we weren’t so reliant on eating animals.  Now, you might be thinking, so what if American GDP doesn’t depend on meat and cars? People like them, and they’re part of what it means to be rich and comfortable in the modern world. And you would have a point. No one would say that heating and cooling shouldn’t exist (well, the French might) just because they use a lot of energy and make up a tiny share of the economy.   But every choice we make in the economy is a trade-off against something else, and everything we spend our limited carbon budget on is a choice to forgo something else. Our task is to decide whether high meat intake and extreme car dependence are worth that trade — whether they make up for their toll on the planet in contributions to our economy or to our flourishing as human beings.  The “eating-the-Earth” problem We can start with animal agriculture, because however bad for the planet it looks on first impression, it’s actually worse.  Estimates of the livestock industry’s greenhouse gas emissions range from around 12 to 20 percent globally; in the US, it’s around 7 percent (despite the lower percentage, per capita meat consumption is substantially higher in the US than it is globally — it’s just that our other sources of emissions are even higher). Recall that farming animals for food takes up a massive amount of land, because we need space for the animals and for the crops needed to feed them. Meat and dairy production hogs 80 percent of all agricultural land to produce what amounts to 17 percent of global calories. Much of it could instead be rewilded with climate-stabilizing ecosystems, which would support biodiversity and also happen to be among our best defenses against global warming because of how good they are at sequestering carbon.  How big would the impact be? The canonical paper on the carbon opportunity cost of animal agriculture finds that a 70 percent reduction in global meat consumption, relative to projected consumption levels in 2050, would remove the equivalent of about nine years of carbon emissions, while a global plant-based diet would remove 16 years of emissions; another study concludes that a rapid phaseout of animal agriculture could effectively freeze increases in all greenhouse gases over the next 30 years, and offset most carbon emissions this century. It’s worth pausing to appreciate just how miraculous that is. Freeing up even some of the land now used for meat and dairy turns it into a negative-emissions machine better than any existing carbon capture technology, giving us a carbon budget windfall that could ease the phaseout of fossil fuels and buy time for solving harder problems like decarbonizing aviation. This is as close as it gets to a free lunch, as long as you’re willing to make it a vegan lunch.  Organizing society around cars doesn’t make sense  We can think of car dependence as the other big resource black hole in US society. Transportation is the top source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country, and cars are the biggest source within that category, accounting for about 16 percent of all US emissions. Globally, gas-powered cars are in retreat — a very good thing for both climate change and deadly air pollution, though the US is increasingly falling behind peer countries in auto electrification.  Still, if it were just a matter of swapping out gas-guzzlers for EVs, auto transportation wouldn’t be an obstacle to truly sustainable growth. But EVs alone aren’t a silver bullet for repairing the environmental problems of cars.  One influential paper on the subject found as much in 2020, concluding that, at any realistic pace of electrification, EV growth wouldn’t be enough to meet climate targets, and even with universal adoption, EVs aren’t emissions-free. They take lots of energy to make — especially those heavy batteries — and an enormous amount of steel and critical minerals. These are scarce inputs that we also need to decarbonize the electric grid and build other green infrastructure.  That isn’t to say that EVs aren’t better for the climate than gas-powered vehicles — they absolutely are. But as the lead author of that paper wrote in an accompanying commentary, “The real question is, do you even need a car?” The problem is not the existence of cars, but our total dependence on them. In most of the country, Americans have no other convenient transportation options. And remember, we’re trying to optimize for the least resources used for the most economic upside. Organizing society around the movement of hundreds of millions of two-ton metal boxes is… obviously not that, and the reasons why go well beyond emissions from the cars themselves. The car-dependent urban form that dominates America forces us to build things spread far apart — sprawl, in other words — which forces us to use more land. As of 2010, according to one estimate, the US devoted a land area about the size of New Jersey to parking spots alone.   Our cities and suburbs occupy less than one-tenth as much land as farming — about 3 percent of the US total — but they still matter for the environment, fragmenting the habitats on which wildlife and ecosystems depend. Plus, housing in the US is sprawling enough that some exurban communities stretch across outlying rural counties, occupying an unknown additional share of land that’s not included in the 3 percent figure.   Perhaps most damaging from an economic perspective, the sprawling development pattern that car dependence both enables and relies upon has driven the misallocation of valuable land toward low-density single-family homes, driving our national housing crisis. Cars are by no means the sole reason behind the housing shortage, but without mass car dependence, it would be vastly harder to lock so much of our land into inefficient uses. Meanwhile, Americans pay dearly for car dependence in the form of costly infrastructure and tens of thousands of traffic deaths each year. Urbanists sometimes like to say that the US prioritizes cars over people — that an alien arriving on Earth would probably think cars are our planet’s apex species. In some senses, that’s certainly true — the privileges that we’ve reserved for cars make it harder to meet the basic human need of housing, which makes us poorer and diminishes the agglomeration effects that make cities dynamic and productive. One widely cited paper estimated, astonishingly, that housing supply constraints, especially in the highest-productivity cities, cut US economic growth by 36 percent, relative to what it would have been otherwise, from 1964 to 2009. Imagine how much higher the GDP of Los Angeles would be if it doubled its housing stock and population and, with its freeways already maxed out, enabled millions more people to get around on foot, bike, and transit.  And, of course, since autos and animal products are both very high in negative externalities, the benefits of reducing our collective dependence on them go well beyond the strictly economic or environmental. Americans would spend less money managing chronic disease and die fewer premature deaths (in the case of meat and dairy, probably, and in the case of cars, undoubtedly). We would torture and kill fewer animals (and fewer people would have to spend their working lives doing the killing). We would help keep antibiotics working, and we might even prevent the next pandemic.  But will we do it? The growth that brought us industrial modernity is an awe-inspiring thing: It’s given us an abundance of choices, and it’s made obsolete brutal ways of life that not long ago were a shorthand for prosperity, like coal mining or the hunting of whales to make industrial products. Prosperity can be measured concretely in rising incomes and lengthening lifespans, but it’s also an evolving story we tell ourselves about what constitutes the good life, and what we’re willing to trade to get it.  With cars, at least, we might have the seeds of a different story. Dethroning the automobile in car-loving America remains a grueling, uphill battle, and I wouldn’t necessarily call myself optimistic, but transportation reform flows quite naturally from the changes we already know we need to make to solve our housing shortage.  The best way to reduce the number of miles we drive is to permit a greater density of homes anywhere where there’s demand for it, especially in the parts of cities that already have the affordances of car-free or car-light life (and it’s definitely not all or nothing — I own a car and can appreciate its conveniences, while driving maybe a quarter as much as the average American). The housing abundance movement is winning the intellectual argument necessary to change policy in that direction. And maybe most crucially, we know many Americans want to live in these places — some of the most in-demand homes in the country are in walkable neighborhoods. If we make it easy to build lots of housing in the centers of growing cities, people will move there.  But animal agriculture, barring a game-changing breakthrough in cell-cultivated meat, is a somewhat different story. It’s one thing to show that we’re not missing out on economic growth by forgoing meat, and quite another to persuade people that eating less of it isn’t a sacrifice — something the plant-based movement hasn’t yet figured out how to do. At bare minimum, we ought to be pouring public money into meat alternatives research. There’s no shortage of clever policy ideas to nudge consumer choices in the right direction — but for them to succeed rather than backfire terribly, people have to want it. And to that end, I’d encourage anyone to discover the abundance of a low- or no-meat diet, which is an easier choice to make in most of America than escaping car dependence.  Right now, our livestock and our automotive herd squander the resources that could be used to make industrial modernity sustainable for everyone. We grow less than we might because we waste so much on cars and meat. Reclaiming even a fraction of that capacity would make the math of decoupling less brutal, freeing us to build whatever else we can imagine. New York realizes it cannot afford its green promises

New York’s crusade against gas stoves is being placed on the back burner: Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) recently delayed the implementation of a 2023 ban on running gas in new buildings before it took effect in January.That hasn’t been Hochul’s only climate backtrack. In November, she agreed to a Trump-backed gas pipeline, marking the Empire State’s first pipeline in at least a decade — and the first since they passed their hallmark climate law in 2019 requiring the state to cut carbon emissions 40 percent by 2030. Hochul also signed an agreement granting permits to a gas-powered crypto mining facility, on the condition the plant nearly halves its pollution by 2030.When asked in October about the mandate for no gas in new buildings, the governor said she’s “going to look at this with a very realistic approach and do what I can, because my number one focus is affordability.” Hochul’s U-turn is an admission that the anti-energy agenda pushed by far-left environmental groups was always unaffordable.Climate activists accuse Hochul of being a traitor, but maybe the governor has finally realized that there’s rarely any upside to pursuing unrealistic decarbonization plans. At the very least, it looks like she’s paying attention to voters during a reelection cycle. Polling shows 61 percent of New Yorkers — including 54 percent of Democrats — “somewhat” or “strongly” agree that keeping energy affordable in the state is more important right now than reducing greenhouse gas emissions.The state’s residential electricity prices have risen 36 percent since New York passed its decarbonization legislation in 2019, according to a Progressive Policy Institute study. That’s almost three times faster than the rest of the country. Still, nearly half of New York’s electricity is supplied by fossil fuels. That study concludes that New York’s energy strategy is driving up costs, constraining reliable supply and jeopardizing the political viability of the state’s climate agenda. Other blue states face similar pain.It’s no coincidence that most of the states with the highest prices also have the most ambitious decarbonization mandates. Even though the federal government can dish out all kinds of subsidies for renewable energy, the states largely get to regulate how they generate and sell their electricity.Florida has chosen to base its energy generation on reliability and affordability, instead of ideology. Despite intense energy demands driven by a subtropical climate, Florida’s electricity prices are two percent lower than the national average. The state gets about 75 percent of its energy from natural gas.Symbolic climate gestures please activists, but they become a political liability when the bills come due.

At least 14 passengers were killed in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou four years ago when floodwaters filled their train tunnel.Few places are more susceptible than New York. Manhattan was dotted by ponds and crisscrossed by creeks and streams. By the time subway construction began in the early 1900s, few remembered or cared where water once flowed.Today, that oversight is proving costly, said ecologist Eric Sanderson, vice president for urban conservation at the New York Botanical Garden. When paired with the 17th-century re-creation, a strong connection to the flood-prone stations can be seen.“It’s not like you can erase the ecological factors that led to there being ... a creek there,” said Sanderson, who has spent more than a decade studying the city’s pre-Colonial landscape. “And climate change is supercharging those factors.”Like most of the original subway, the 116th Street station was built using the “cut and cover” technique, in which workers dug a trench, constructed the tunnel, then rebuilt the street on top.This graphic is an illustration of the intersection of 116th Street and Lenox Avenue, including a cross-section of the subway station below the street level. If water on the tracks rises as high as the electrified third rail — which supplies power to the trains — it becomes unsafe for subways to run.To avoid that scenario, a drain beneath the tracks carries water to a nearby sump pit. But the drain can become clogged with trash.When the sump pit fills, it activates pumps that push the water into the city’s sewer system. Two of the pumps at 116th Street are more than 100 years old and can handle only a fraction of the rainfall the city now experiences.After decades of budget crises and deferred maintenance, much of the subway system is outdated and in disrepair, the MTA acknowledges.But when it comes to storms, aging pumps are its “Achilles’ heel,” said Eric Wilson, the agency’s senior vice president for climate and land use planning. Of more than 250 pump rooms in the system, 11 percent are in poor or marginal condition, according to a 2023 assessment.At 116th Street, the struggling pneumatic pumps emit a shuddering screech every time they turn on.“You’re looking at a relic, basically,” said Juan Urena, a superintendent in the Department of Subway’s hydraulics division. “It’s time to upgrade.”MTA workers look into the sump pit at the 116th Street station on Oct. 17. The decision to put the subway underground stems from the “Great White Hurricane” of 1888, which killed about 200 people in New York and stranded roughly 15,000 people on the elevated trains that were then the city’s primary transit system. Freezing passengers fled one snowbound train by climbing down a ladder — but only after they paid the ladder’s owner 25 cents each.The catastrophe left residents aghast that their modern metropolis could be brought to its knees by the weather. Within three years, the state had authorized construction of a subterranean transit system.Water has posed a problem from the beginning. Groundwater seeps through tunnel walls, requiring the MTA to pump at least 10 million gallons out of the system every day. When it rains, New York’s tall buildings and paved surfaces prevent water from seeping into soils, causing it to run off into subway tunnels instead.Yet climate change has made the challenge worse, officials said. Plumes of warm, waterlogged air frequently stream out of the tropics and make landfall in the city, dropping large amounts of rain faster than the landscape and infrastructure can absorb it.Most parts of New York’s combined sewer system, which funnels both stormwater and sewage, are designed to handle up to 1.75 inches of rain in an hour. When many of the system’s components were installed more than 50 years ago, that intensity of rain could be expected roughly twice a decade. But a rain gauge at Central Park has recorded rainfall exceeding that threshold five times in the past five years.This is a line chart of annual maximum rainfall at the Central Park gauge. The line chart shows how, in the past few decades, that has been more often exceeded by rainfall averages.“The sewers were designed for a climate we no longer live in,” said Rohit Aggarwala, the city’s chief climate officer and DEP commissioner.When a strong moisture plume swept into the city on July 14, unleashing 2.07 inches of rain in one hour, the sewer system was quickly overwhelmed. Untreated stormwater backed up into streets and homes. Water rained through subway grates, streamed down station stairwells and seeped through cracks in the walls.The overtaxed sewers couldn’t take in additional water from the MTA’s pumps and instead became a source of flooding. At the 28th Street station, water burst through a manhole cover on a train platform, creating a geyser that drenched passengers waiting for the uptown 1 train. (The city welded the cover shut soon after.)“It’s an incredible challenge for any city to have to face,” said Bernice Rosenzweig, an environmental scientist at Sarah Lawrence College and a lead author of the New York City Panel on Climate Change. “The bad decisions were made generations ago, and now it’s figuring out how to deal with that in a fully built-out and operating city.”A manhole cover at the spot where massive flooding took place at the 28th Street station.The worst-case scenarioRosenzweig still remembers stories that emerged from the Zhengzhou subway flooding.Amid the heaviest downpour ever observed in China, water from a collapsed drainage ditch surged into a subway tunnel during rush hour. Survivors spoke of standing on seats and lifting children above the steadily rising water. People began to vomit and faint from lack of oxygen as they exhausted their dwindling pocket of air.The situation in China, which stemmed from a combination of extreme weather, infrastructure failures and human missteps, is not completely analogous to what might happen in New York, Rosenzweig noted.“But it was an important event for city managers and emergency managers to show that it’s not just the nightmare scenario of someone who studies natural hazards for a living,” she said. “It’s something that can happen and has happened, and it’s not unrealistic to plan for those worst-case scenarios.”When the remnants of Hurricane Ida lashed the New York region just over one month later, it underscored Rosenzweig’s worries. Yet all but one of New York’s 36 subway lines were shut down, according to an after-action report, and roughly 1,250 passengers had to be evacuated from the system. Damage to MTA infrastructure totaled $128 million.The full economic toll of transit disruptions is probably even greater, research suggests.“It is the absolutely vital organ of the region,” said Jamie Torres-Springer, president of MTA construction and development.The subway is also important for fighting climate change, he noted: By keeping cars off the street, the MTA estimates that it avoids about 22 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.Yet floods make it harder for New Yorkers to get where they need to go. Subway service was disrupted due to flooding at least 75 times between January 2020 and September 2025, according to a Post analysis of MTA alerts.There’s no simple way to stop heavy rains from spilling into the system, Torres-Springer said.Though the MTA dedicated nearly $3 billion in state and federal funds to implement coastal resiliency measures after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the system in 2012, those protections don’t shield against inland flooding, he noted. The tunnel doors and grate covers developed after Sandy must also be deployed with hours or days of advance notice — precluding their use during sudden cloudbursts, like the July 14 storm.Outdated pipes in the pump room at the 116th Street station.Stemming the tideInstead of racing to respond to an approaching deluge, the MTA has adopted a sprawling set of interventions that can protect the subway system day in and day out. In a five-year capital plan passed this spring, the agency committed an unprecedented $700 million to new stormwater defenses.Much of that funding will go toward upgrading at least a dozen pump rooms, including the one at 116th Street. New pumps are made of stainless steel and can handle much more water per minute than their older counterparts, Urena said.But many solutions are lower-tech — what Torres-Springer calls “tactical” interventions that can be implemented one by one, gradually plugging the system’s thousands of leaks.By adding one or two steps to station entrances — as the agency is doing at 116th Street — the MTA aims to protect places that used to get drenched with every storm.New raised grates, sometimes topped by bicycle racks or benches, can prevent puddles on the surface from falling onto passengers below.At a few stations, including 116th Street, the agency has sealed vents with temporary covers until more permanent improvements can be installed.In some places, stopping floods is as simple as keeping debris out of the drains that siphon water on the tracks into station pump rooms. Since 2017, the MTA has maintained a catalogue of nearly 10,000 drain boxes scattered across the subway system. The agency has said it aims to clean at least a quarter of them every year.As of this month, the MTA has installed or set aside funds for flood defenses at 110 of the 200 flood-prone stations, according to a Post analysis of agency data. But 22 stations that have flooded more than once are not on its list of targets. Several of these stations, most of which are in Brooklyn, were among those inundated during the July 14 storm.A 2023 report from New York’s state comptroller also faulted the MTA for failing to complete several flood-proofing projects and for inconsistently following extreme-weather protocols.In a statement, MTA spokesperson Mitch Schwartz said that vulnerable stations not targeted in the capital plan might still receive flood defenses as part of other upgrade work.“We have never moved faster to keep this system safe from extreme weather,” he said.But the MTA can’t hold back surging floodwaters on its own, Torres-Springer said. The fate of the subway is inextricably linked to that of another massive, aging underground system: the sewer.The DEP recently adopted a requirement that all new stormwater infrastructure be capable of withstanding 2.15 inches of rainfall in an hour. The agency has directed about $10 billion to drainage network improvements, expanded sewer mains and underground tanks capable of storing excess water during storms.With a limited budget and more than 7,400 miles of sewer pipes to maintain, Aggarwala said, the DEP’s priority is preventing water from getting into people’s homes, where it can destroy possessions and threaten lives. Subway disruptions due to flooding, he added, are more temporary.As the skies above New York grow ever warmer and wetter, keeping water out of the subway will also involve restoring it to the surface where it originally flowed.Ecologist Eric Sanderson.Guided in part by Sanderson’s research on New York’s original ecology, city agencies are trying to uncover hidden creeks and wetlands — creating “bluebelts” that can absorb excess rainfall during severe storms. Copy editing by Rachael Bolek.MethodologyTo examine trends in heavy rainfall in New York City, The Post analyzed 130 years of rain gauge data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information weather station in Central Park. To define what counts as a heavy rainfall day, The Post used the period from 1895 to 1924 to find the threshold for a 95th percentile precipitation event. Days with at least 0.5 millimeters of precipitation were included. Using a simple linear regression, The Post measured the change in frequency of the 95th percentile rain events at the station from 1895 to 2024.The analysis showed a significant positive trend in 95th percentile rain events, with the number of days each year with heavy rainfall increasing by nearly three days, a roughly 60 percent increase.Carolien Mossel, a PhD candidate in the CUNY Graduate Center’s earth and environmental science department, provided guidance on the data and analysis of hourly precipitation amounts for Central Park from May 1948 to August 2025.​​To investigate global changes in extreme precipitation, The Post measured the amount of water vapor flowing through Earth’s atmosphere, a metric called integrated vapor transport (IVT). The analysis also identified days and locations where heavy rainfall coincided with high IVT.
